Tell Us A Bit About Yourself?
Hi, I’m Tyler, one of the bartenders at the San Diego Tasting Room. I’ve been working at White Labs Brewing Co. just over a year. Early October was my one-year anniversary!
What's Your Favorite Thing Working for White Labs Brewing Co?
Learning! One of the reasons I wanted to work for White Labs Brewing Co is because I found a place where I could advance my beer education in places where I have historically lacked.
But besides that, I love the people I work with. Everyone here is a character and is easy to work with.
What's Your Favorite Beer/Food/Yeast?
Favorite Food is either the Bianca Fungi or margherita pizza. Hard to choose between the complex flavors of the Bianca and the classic margarita with the giant basil leaves on each slice!
As for beer, my favorite beer I’ve had here has been the Fall Bock. I drank A LOT of that beer. It tasted like autumn leaves (and reminded me of home, New England.)
As for Yeast, I will definitely be coming around on WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast, especially in West Coast style IPAs.
What Inspired This Brew?
I really wanted an old-school, 90s West Coast IPA. When speaking to Jake, our Head Brewer, about brewing a throwback, bitter IPA, I mostly described Harpoon IPA or Dogfish Head 60 Minute.
I was looking for the style to reflect a distinct hoppy bitterness backed by a slight caramel malt bill. For flavors, I definitely get that caramel/honey backbone, with some nice clean bitterness. As well as some notes of toast and orange blossom.
What's A Random Fact About Yourself?
I am a big reader, that’s probably my main hobby. I hit 44 books last year, and am aiming for 50 this year. I try to read a little bit of everything, fiction, nonfiction. I love to learn, so anything that allows me to experience something I’m not well versed in is alluring to me. Kurt Vonnegut, Louise Erdrich, and Michael Pollan are my favorite authors.
